Where to Take Junk and Recycling Near Salem
Sometimes the most direct way to clear a garage, spare room, or jobsite is to load everything up and take it in yourself. Salem has several public drop-off options, but the right stop depends on what you are hauling. Household garbage, clean recyclables, electronics, yard debris, and construction material do not all go to the same place.
Fees and acceptance rules can change, so check the facility page or call before leaving—especially if your load includes appliances, tires, paint, chemicals, or a mix of materials.
Salem–Keizer Recycling & Transfer Station
3250 Deer Park Dr. SE, Salem
Open daily, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. • 503-588-5169
This is the best first stop for a typical household cleanout. Marion County lists household and commercial garbage, yard waste, tires, and appliances as fee-based items. Its recycling area accepts several materials at no charge, including car batteries, mixed paper and cardboard, glass bottles and jars, and eligible computers, televisions, monitors, and laptops. Daily limits apply to free electronics.
Household hazardous waste is handled at a separate building at the same address and follows different hours and container rules. Check Marion County’s current facility details before your trip.
Other Useful Local Drop-Off Options
Brown’s Island Demolition Landfill
2895 Faragate St. S, Salem • Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Use Brown’s Island for specific construction and demolition materials such as concrete, brick, tile, sheetrock, asphalt, dirt, and rock. Its compost facility also accepts yard debris. It does not accept ordinary household garbage, carpet, or metal. Photo ID, fees, and special asbestos rules apply. Review the accepted-material list.
Garten Electronics Recycling
500 Hawthorne Ave. SE, Salem • Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
For computers and other electronic devices, Garten offers a public drop-off focused on responsible reuse and recycling. Garten no longer operates its electronics drop-off on Industrial Way, so use the Hawthorne Avenue location and call ahead if you are unsure about an item. See Garten’s current drop-off information.
Re:Source Public Drop-Off
3690 Brooklake Rd. NE, Salem • Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. • 503-390-4000
Re:Source operates a public and contractor drop-off north of Salem and processes waste and recyclable material for Marion County residents. Marion County also directs tip-style loads other than yard debris here. Call before driving over to confirm that your load is accepted and to ask about the current drop-off cutoff. Before You Load the Truck
- Sort cardboard, glass, metal, electronics, yard debris, and garbage before you leave.
- Secure the entire load with a tarp, net, or tie-downs. Marion County adds a fee for unrestrained loads.
- Bring photo ID and expect disposal fees for garbage and many bulky items.
- Keep chemicals in their original containers when possible, never mix them, and check hazardous-waste limits first.
- For an unusual item, search the Marion County recycling guide before choosing a facility.
Rather Skip the Dump Run?
Self-hauling can make sense when you have a safe vehicle, time to sort the load, and items you can lift. When the pile is heavy, scattered through the house, or likely to take several trips, Bison Dump can handle the entire job instead.
Our Salem junk removal crew lifts and loads everything from where it sits, hauls it to the appropriate local facility, and leaves the area swept up. You do not need to borrow a trailer, wait at the scale, or spend your day driving back and forth.
